Thank You to Everyone who Participated in the 2/22 Pedometer Challenge!
On Sunday, February 22, 2015 the ASMBS Foundation and the Florida State Chapter of the ASMBS presented a statewide obesity awareness campaign in Florida. The objective of the 2/22 Pedometer Challenge was to bring attention to the disease of obesity by virtually walking the length of the state. The goal was to walk from Pensacola to Key West, a distance over 820 miles, and 1.7 million steps.
On the day of the event, participants monitored their steps with pedometers and fitness trackers. At the end of the day, over 560 participants reported their step count online. The final count totaled over 6.1 million steps, a distance of 2,900 miles.
Jacksonville, FL was the city with the most participants, while the bariatric treatment programs at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston had the most individuals to record their steps. Participants of this event included those affected by obesity and other related diseases, healthcare providers, and members of the community.
Of the participants surveyed many reported having a great time and feeling motivated to continue to walk. One participate from Daytona, FL said “This challenge motivated me beyond what I thought I could accomplish. I have obesity in my family and hope to inspire others.”
